An Electronic Case Finding and Help Assessment Tool for Youth
Linked to PMS
One of YouthCHAT's incredible features is its ability to link and access a young person's YouthCHAT evaluation via PMS's including MedTech and Indici. (In the HEEADSSS tab)
YouthCHAT data will allow the advanced HEEADSSS form to self-populate.
This feature is linked using NHI numbers, meaning the young person’s results can be viewed by any relevant medical practitioner.
Immediate Results
YouthCHAT results can be accessed immediately after a young person has completed the assessment.
Do note - the young person can opt out at any point during the assessment, therefore terminating the survey. Any answers already given are still available for review.
12 Modules
After the three demographic questions, there are twelve question modules (see below).
For some modules, there are initial gateway questions that, with a positive response, lead to further questions.
The modules are:
Accessible & Versatile
YouthCHAT is online software, meaning all you need is a digital device (e.g. computer, tablet, phone), and Wi-Fi connection or cellular data.
Because of this, YouthCHAT can be used in many settings, such as:
- In a clinic, administered prior to a consultation (i.e., the young person completes while waiting for their appointment/the health practitioner is otherwise engaged).
- In a clinic, during a consultation (to facilitate discussion).
- During home visits or offsite consultations (such as school visits).
- Remotely (a link is sent, followed up by a phone/video consultation as necessary).
Validated Screens
YouthCHAT has been developed using pre-existing and new modules.
The original pen and paper CHAT has undergone extensive evaluation and validation in NZ, as has the electronic version eCHAT.
These modules include:
- ASSIST questionnaire
- SACS questionnaire
- PHQ-A (adolescent depression)
- CHAT
- YouthCHAT
Stepped Care Approach
The aim of YouthCHAT is to quickly and easily identify common (and co-existing) risky health behaviours and mental health issues for young people.
The answers they give during YouthCHAT can be used to kickstart the consultation, identify the most urgent areas, determine the areas the young person would like help with, and get started on their treatment plan.
YouthCHAT has been mapped to HEEADSSS, so it is a great way to start a HEEADSSS assessment.
Help
Questions
For each positive response, the young person is asked whether they want help (Yes / Yes, but not today / No), which indicates issues that are a priority to them.
This can help guide the rest of the consultation, and determine which topics they are ready to discuss.
Text to Speech
Each question and answer has a text-to-speech option.
Simply click the icon and listen to the voice.
Clinics can turn off this feature if desired.
Affordable
Enjoy 30 day free trial Then only $175 annual per clinic.
You get:
Supports Individuals
Language choice: A Te Reo version of the YouthCHAT Questions can be selected from the dropdown list. This means the YouthCHAT questions will be displayed in Te Reo.
At any point during the questionnaire the young person can opt-out by clicking on 'finish early' which terminates the questionnaire.
An alert to self-harm comes up in red. The organisation admin and questionnaire initiator will receive an email when a screen is flagged with a self-harm alert.
Time Saving
YouthCHAT typically takes 5-15 minutes to complete.
You can:
- Save time by having a young person complete the survey in the waiting room, or at home.
- Speed up the HEEADSSS assessment by allowing the YouthCHAT data to self-populate via PMS including MedTech and Indici.
- Screen any number of youth at once - which will enable YouthCHAT to prioritise those of higher risk.
Secure & Confidential
Secure cloud hosting with encryption of data in transit and at rest.
Authorised clinicians are able to access YouthCHAT report data through authenticated login to the YouthCHAT website.
Only report data for individuals for which the clinician is involved with in terms of provision of care are accessible.

YouthCHAT was developed by Professors Felicity Goodyear-Smith and Jim Warren along with a team at the Faculty of Medical & Health Science at The University of Auckland.
Dr Rhiannon Martel and Dr Hiran Thabrew were also an important part of the development of YouthCHAT.
Dr. Martel completed her PhD thesis on YouthCHAT, and curretly uses it in her everyday practice. She provides clinician and operational support to all YouthCHAT users.
Ongoing software development including new features and software maintenance is provided by Kekeno Tech - a team of NZ-based software engineers and clinicians.
This work is performed under license of Auckland UniServices with Professors Goodyear-Smith and Warren as the Scientific Advisory Board.
CHAT was first developed in 2003 and research has taken place over many years.
A number of software versions of CHAT have been developed:
eCHAT (electronic CHAT), VeCHAT (for veterans), MatCHAT (for maternal care), and finally
YouthCHAT.
Initially YouthCHAT was developed in 2015 in a research context.
Since 2021, Kekeno Tech has been responsible for its modernisation and rollout into youth health services.
There is a substantial collection of publications documenting the development, validation and evaluation of YouthCHAT.
